Subnet Mask

• Helps the device understand which part of the IP address refers to the network and which part refers to the device

Default gateway

• This is the IP address of the

DNS server

• like phone book of the internet, it converts domain names like google.com into IP address

2 Types of IP Config

Static IP

• Manual IP setup
• used for devices where a fixed address is preferred

Dynamic IP

• Via DHCP
  • Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
• Automatic setup
  • Your device automatically gets its IP address and other settings from a DHCP server
• More common for everyday devices

DHCP

• Automatically assigning IP addresses and other network configuration details to devices on a network

Purpose

1. Automatically assign IPs, removes need for manual configuration
2. Prevent IP conflicts
3. Flexible network changes
