Individualism

Equality of Opportunity
- The idea that social status is based on effort rather than inherited position
- Americans value equality of opportunity but do not support equality of result
Free Enterprise
- In a laissez-faire, or free enterprise system the government plays a small role
- In a command-and-control economy, the government dictates much of the economy
- America has a mixed economy
- Americans tend to prefer free market
Rule of Law
- Rule of Law - no one is above the law
Limited Government
- Government must be limited to prevent it from taking away rights
