• The idea that social status is based on effort rather than inherited position
• Americans value equality of opportunity but do not support equality of result

Free Enterprise

• In a laissez-faire, or free enterprise system the government plays a small role
• In a command-and-control economy, the government dictates much of the economy
• America has a mixed economy
• Americans tend to prefer free market

Rule of Law

• Rule of Law - no one is above the law

Limited Government

• Government must be limited to prevent it from taking away rights
